About Me

We don’t live in a vacuum, these are just SOME of the people and traditions that have influenced me and my music style.

Early sixties influences were The Seekers, The Beetles, Simon and Garfunkle as well as Debussy, Gershwin, Fats Waller and Bing Crosby. Seventies influences were Janis Joplin, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Roberta Flack, Billie Holiday, Patrick O’Shea, Bartok, Mediaeval and Renaissance song, Nationalistic music (music influenced by the folk music of a variety of cultures). Eighties influences were B52s, Voix Bulgares, Cocteaux Twins, Kate Bush, Philip Glass, Tan Dun, Schumann, Crumb, world music, new age music, minimalist music and performance music such as Annea Lockwood (John Cousins closer to home), Nineties influences were traditional and modern Chinese music.

My music has also been influenced by my life’s experiences, many of my compositions are deeply personal and almost diary like. Feminism, a woman-centred view of the world, matriarchal spiritually, female sexuality and sensuality are central themes in my music. Other issues dealt with, from the seedier side of life are rape and physical abuse. Songs dealing with these issues range from pleading, to suffering, hating and anger, to healing and letting go, right through to coming out the other side celebrating.

Although the bulk of my music is vocal, I have written numerous instrumental pieces as well. I have also composed a few performance pieces. My first piano piece was written when I was 10 years old. My first orchestral piece of music was dreamt when I was 16 years old, a symphonic poem I called Navis Longa. It was written out using graphic notation, all I was capable of at that age.

Although my rate of composition has tailed off over the years, I’m still composing. My last composition was an instrumental piece called Elysium written in November 2008. My priority at present is to record what I have already composed so that it is available to share.
